Causes of Hearing Problems

the many causes hearing Problems

Hearing problems and the loss of hearing is usually something that occurs gradually over time, and can be caused by any number of factors. Some ways that your hearing can become impaired are:

Hearing problems due to exposure to loud or constant noise

One of the most common causes for hearing loss is due to repeated exposure to loud noises. Also known as noise induced hearing loss or sensorineural hearing loss, this occurs when the sensitive hairs in the ears become damaged. This is often caused by working with loud tools, or in an environment where there is a lot of noise, such as during a live concert or in a noisy factory. It can also be caused by listening to loud music regularly using headphones.

Hearing Problems and Aging

Another leading cause of hearing loss is due to the natural aging process, which occurs over time, often commencing between the ages of 30 and 40 years old. This is also known as sensorineural hearing loss, and is usually caused by the tiny sensitive hairs in the ear being damaged or dying due to old age.

Illness

Viral infections of the inner ear and surrounding tissues such as mumps, measles and rubella can all contribute to a loss of hearing. Other illnesses such as Meniere’s Disease can cause tinnitus or vertigo, which can also cause hearing loss.

There are groups in Australia that also offer support for different illnesses. Please refer to:

Trauma/Injury

The ears are very delicate and as such there are conditions which may affect their ability to hear effectively. Injury to the ear or canal through trauma can cause bleeding and infection which could cause either temporary or permanent hearing loss. A change in air pressure such as when scuba-diving or on an airplane can cause fluid imbalance or bleeding which can also lead to hearing loss. A sudden loud noise near the ear can also impact its function and cause either temporary or permanent damage to hearing.
